Delayed Speech & Language

As with other skills and milestones, the age at which kids learn language and start talking can vary, however there are certain ages where certain skills are expected to emerge.  Early intervention (therapy for those birth-3 years) helps promote age-appropriate development and supports families during this important growth period.

Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS)

Children with CAS are often very difficult to understand, as they have problems saying sounds, syllables, and words. CAS is a motor speech disorder, meaning that the brain has problems planning to move the body parts (e.g., lips, jaw, tongue) needed for speech. This is not due to muscle weakness or paralysis. The child knows what he or she wants to say, but his/her brain has difficulty coordinating the muscle movements necessary to say those words. CAS is often confused with other speech sound disorders and can only be diagnosed by a Speech Language Pathologist.

Articulation & Phonology

Most children make mistakes in pronunciation as they acquire new vocabulary. A speech sound disorder occurs when these mistakes continue past a certain age. Each sound has a different range of ages when it is expected to be produced correctly.  Speech therapy is warranted when errors continue past these developmental norms.  Speech sound disorders include difficulty with articulation (pronunciation) and phonological processes (sound patterns).

Expressive Language

Expressive Language refers to what people are able to convey to others. Some children may have trouble with:

  • Asking questions
  • Naming objects
  • Using gestures
  • Putting words together into sentences
  • Learning songs and rhymes
  • Using correct pronouns, like “he” or “they”
  • Knowing how to start a conversation and keep it going

Fluency & Stuttering

Stuttering is a communication disorder in which the flow of speech is broken by repetitions, prolongations, or blocks (no sound) of sounds, syllables, and words. There may also be facial tension, tics, and body movements associated with the effort to speak.  Stuttering usually begins between 2 and 6 years of age. Many children go through normal periods of disfluency lasting fewer than 6 months. Stuttering lasting longer than this may need treatment.

Receptive Language

Receptive language refers to what a person understands. Some children may have difficulty with:
  • Understanding what gestures mean
  • Following directions
  • Answering questions
  • Identifying objects and pictures
  • Taking turns when talking with others
